This verse teaches us that there will be a judgment and and there will be hell fire. We have already found that the word hell in the Old Testament means grave. How can a grave be on fire ? Where and when would a grave be on fire ? How is the judgment connected to hell fire ? The Bible gives us a glimpse of the scene.
"And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:12-15)
Notice what happens to those whose names are not written in the book of life. They are judged according to their un-Christlike works that have been recorded in the books of heaven. They are then resurrected to receive their punishment; the 2nd death in the lake of fire where death and hell will also be destroyed. Read again what happens to the grave or hell as it is called. It is cast into the lake of fire.
